The German Aces Speak: World War II Through the Eyes of Four of the Luftwaffe's Most Important Commanders The German Aces Speak: World War II Through the Eyes of Four of the Luftwaffe's Most Important Commanders OTHER ARTICLES Few stories epitomize the sheer drama and sacrifice of combat more perfectly than those of the fighter pilots of World War II. As romanticized as any soldier in history, the WWII fighter pilot was viewed as larger than life—dashing souls waging war amongst the clouds. From 1939-1945, thousands of Allied fighter pilots took to the skies above Europe and North Africa with the common goal of ending Adolf Hitler's dream of European domination. In the 65+ years since the Allied victory in World War II, stories of these pilots' heroics have never been in short supply. But what about their adversaries? What about the highly skilled German aviators who pushed the Allies to the very brink of defeat? During World War II, the Third Reich’s fighter pilots d...

Promised the Moon: The Untold Story of the First Women in the Space Race

Image
Promised the Moon: The Untold Story of the First Women in the Space Race Promised the Moon: The Untold Story of the First Women in the Space Race OTHER ARTICLES In 1959, the doctor who supervised NASA's astronaut selection concluded that women might fare better in space than men. His testing of 25 top female pilots for reactions to isolation, centrifuge, and weightlessness proved him right, and 13 exceptional candidates were identified. Despite countless personal and professional sacrifices, these women joined NASA's clandestine new program - which, after two intensive years, was suddenly, and mysteriously, canceled. Promised the Moon chronicles the dramatic story of the rise and fall of these pioneering female astronauts, patriots betrayed by men like John Glenn, who opposed women astronauts, and by someone from their own ranks. The first writer to track down the surviving Fellow Lady Astronaut Trainees, Stephanie Nolen vividly brings this fascinating and timely tale to life...

Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space (AIAA Education)

Image
Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space (AIAA Education) Rocketdyne: Powering Humans into Space (AIAA Education) OTHER ARTICLES From the first American orbiting satellite, to Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin's historical walk on the Moon, virtually every major achievement in American Space history was made possible by a Rocketdyne engine. And, that record has stood true for over forty years, as today the Space Shuttle program continues to rely on engines designed and built by Rocketdyne. This book is the story behind that unprecedented accomplishment. It is the chronicle of success of one team of rocket pioneers who propelled the American space program from trailing the Soviet Union in the 1950s and early 1960s into today's position of leadership in space. It is a story of heroes and even a few villains, but mostly it is a story of triumphant success in the human venture into space. For the early history of rocketry up through the work of Dr Robert Goddard in the early 1940s, K...

Mars Owners' Workshop Manual: From 4.5 billion years ago to the present (Haynes Manuals)

Image
Mars Owners' Workshop Manual: From 4.5 billion years ago to the present (Haynes Manuals) Mars Owners' Workshop Manual: From 4.5 billion years ago to the present (Haynes Manuals) OTHER ARTICLES This rapidly paced book provides a fascinating insight into how our understanding of Mars has developed. When a Renaissance astronomer studied the motions of Mars in the sky, he discovered the laws of planetary motion. With the advent of the telescope, the planet could be studied as a world in its own right, measuring the length of its day and mapping its surface in ever more detail. Late in the 19th century, Percival Lowell in the USA claimed Mars was criss-crossed by canals created by a race of intelligent beings to transport water from the polar ice caps to the equatorial areas. Although Lowell’s vision of Mars was rejected by astronomers, it inspired storytellers to write classic works of science fiction. By the mid-20th century, the consensus view was that large tracts of the plane...

Letters from MIR: An Astronaut's Letters to His Son

Image
Letters from MIR: An Astronaut's Letters to His Son Letters from MIR: An Astronaut's Letters to His Son OTHER ARTICLES Jerry Linenger's five months aboard the Space Station Mir were anything but calm. They included a major fire, malfunctioning computer systems, and lost electrical and cooling power, among other things. He was literally cut off from the world, and more than that, he was cut off from his wife and young son. Linenger originally began writing to his son so that later in life he would know what his father was thinking while he was travelling in space for five months. However, after the fire that nearly killed the astronauts aboard the station, his letters became deeper emotionally. As well as recounting the details of the day, he sought to tell his son of the unlimited love he had for him, as well as his hopes for his son's future.
